Die Fuge
A clever interweaving with added value for the environment
The school extension docks directly onto the existing building with its cubature and size orientated towards it. The result: two schools of equal value. The primary and secondary schools share the access, the communal functions from the assembly hall to the canteen and the newly created roof areas. The floor plan of the existing building will be reorganised so that the areas that are currently less well-lit will become common rooms and ancillary rooms. The room dimensions of the existing building will be adopted in the new building. This results in very economical ceiling dimensions with moderate spans for timber construction. This means that the timber construction can be realised effectively, only the details have not yet been sufficiently thought through.
The design is particularly impressive due to its urban planning and functional approach as well as its feasibility as a resource-saving timber construction. Due to the compact positioning, the clever interweaving of old and new and the joint use of rooms, it is a very space-saving and economical design that saves material and spatial resources and creates equivalent qualities for both schools. At the same time, this approach is the only one that preserves the trees on the eastern edge of the site, creating a green apron that adds value to the neighbourhood.
